Regional Development Minister Geoff Brock needs to stand up for regional communities and support the State Liberals’ Marine Parks Bill when it comes to a vote in Parliament today.
Shadow Regional Development Minister Steven Griffiths reintroduced amendments to the Marine Parks Bill to change 13 out of the 83 sanctuary zones to habitat protection zones to soften the severe impact being experienced by fishermen in small communities.
The Bill will go to a vote in Parliament today.
“Regional Development Minister Geoff Brock and the Weatherill Labor Government must support this Bill,” said Shadow Minister for Regional Development Steven Griffiths.
“The State Liberals’ Bill supports recreational and commercial fishers, whilst continuing to protect our fish stocks.
“The Weatherill Labor Government’s marine park zones have been widely condemned by the fishing industry, recreational fishers and regional communities.
“The State Liberals support marine parks, but not the zones enforced by the Weatherill Labor Government.
“Marine parks must be well-designed to be effective and this includes undertaking proper environmental mapping and baseline studies – this did not take place in SA.
“Our regional communities have been neglected by the Weatherill Labor Government for 13 long years.
“Today, Minister Brock can change that by listening to what our regional communities want.”
