Labor must prove they have shovel ready projects

The State Liberals have demanded the Weatherill Government release correspondence with Infrastructure Australia to prove that South Australia has shovel ready projects that could be funded by the Federal Government.

Yesterday, Treasurer Tom Koutsantonis claimed South Australia had not received any new infrastructure funding in the 2015 Federal Budget despite having projects waiting for funding.

The claim followed an embarrassing gaffe when Treasurer Koutsantonis claimed that funding for the Torrens Rail Junction project had been delayed by the Federal Government when in fact it was the State Government that asked for the funding to be delayed.

“If Treasurer Koutsantonis has some shovel ready projects hiding somewhere he needs to let South Australians know what they are,” said Shadow Minister for Infrastructure Vickie Chapman.

“There is a big difference between submitting properly developed project plans to Infrastructure Australia and the Treasurer bashing his fist on a table demanding funding without a plan in front of him.

“One of the biggest problems with Weatherill Labor’s infrastructure program is their inability to develop quality plans and to prioritise projects.

“I’m calling on Mr Koutsantonis to release his Government’s submissions to Infrastructure Australia to prove that they have been developing high quality infrastructure proposals.

“If Mr Koutsantonis fails to release the plans then we can safely assume his claims yesterday were nothing more than hot air, which is what we have come to expect from him.

“Other states publish their Infrastructure Australia submissions – why can’t South Australia?

"Publishing Infrastructure Australia submissions would be a good step towards open, transparent and accountable government.”
