Labor’s State Budget communications campaign

Shadow Treasurer Rob Lucas today slammed Premier Weatherill and Treasurer Koutsantonis for planning to spend hundreds of thousands of taxpayer dollars in a belated attempt to sell their discredited State Budget.

The Weatherill Labor Government has released a tender for a communications campaign for its 2016-17 State Budget.

The tender says the budgeted costs just for producing the campaign materials is $200,000. However, the costs of advertising for the proposed 8 week campaign are not revealed.

The document states that the purpose and background of the tender is that:

“There is a perception that South Australians are negative about the South Australian economy due to thoughts in the community of high unemployment, decline of the manufacturing industry and perceived reduction in government spending on core services.”

“Mr Weatherill and Mr Koutsantonis are delusional if they think there is only a ‘perception’ that there is high unemployment in South Australia,” said Mr Lucas.

“The brutal reality is that South Australia has the highest unemployment rate in the nation and even Mr Koutsantonis’ budget admits jobs growth this year will be less than half the nation’s job growth rate.

“The political spin for the budget is summarised in the tender document as ‘promoting SA as the state of employment’!

“Furthermore, it is interesting to note that this tender was released after the State Budget on the 15th of July.

“Clearly the Weatherill Labor Government wasn’t anticipating the negative Budget feedback that it received.

“Mr Koutsantnois must now reveal publicly the total budgeted cost of this 8 week campaign and also explain why he gives it priority whilst critical health services are being cut.
