The State Liberals have welcomed today’s release of the Defence White Paper by the Turnbull Coalition Government, but reiterate calls for the 12 submarines to be built in South Australia.
The State Liberals have also welcomed the Federal Government’s commitment to build 9 frigates in Adelaide.
“Today’s Defence White Paper provides a continuous build strategy, with the confirmation of 9 frigates being built in Adelaide,” said State Liberal Leader Steven Marshall.
“However, the Federal Government must fulfil their commitment to build 12 submarines in South Australia.
“Adelaide is currently the only place in Australia with submarine building capabilities.
“Australia’s next generation of submarines will be critical to our nation’s defence capabilities and for employment opportunities in South Australia.
“I have been lobbying the Federal Government on the benefits of building the future submarines in Adelaide, including having regular meetings with the Prime Minister and Defence Minister.
“The Weatherill Labor Government must also immediately commit to upgrading Techport’s facilities to ensure that we have the most up-to-date and competitive infrastructure available to secure shipbuilding contracts.
“It was revealed yesterday that Defence SA has developed plans to upgrade Techport to allow multiple projects to be built at once.
“If the Weatherill Labor Government is doing everything it can to secure shipbuilding contracts as it claims, then why isn’t this infrastructure being built now?
“Unfortunately the Weatherill Labor Government has also not offered any incentive to the three bidders in the Competitive Evaluation Process for Australia’s future submarines to build the vessels in Adelaide.
“The State Liberals will continue to lobby the Federal Government to secure the future of shipbuilding in South Australia and will continue to fight for local jobs on behalf of all South Australians.”
