Libs support Moana IGA battle for fair shop trading hours

Shadow Treasurer Rob Lucas said today the Weatherill Government’s crazy shop trading hours laws were stopping many stores like Moana IGA from trading at the same time as its competitors.

At the peak of the summer holiday season for many tourists and holiday makers the Moana IGA is forced to close at 5:00pm on weekends when it wants to be able to continue to trade like its competitors.

“Why should its competitors like On The Run and Caltex Star Mart outlets be able to sell break, milk and a wide range of supermarket goods after 5:00pm and yet the IGA is forced to close?

“One of the On The Run outlets even has a very big sign advertising its ‘OTR supermarket’.

“Similarly, the Moana IGA is at a competitive disadvantage when it is forced to close on public holidays.

“It is clearly outrageously unfair to this small business operator and prevents them from potentially creating more jobs at a time when many people are desperate for work.

“The owners of the Moana IGA have lobbied the Weatherill Government for a change to the laws over a long period of time without any success.

“The simple reason is that ex union bosses like Peter Malinauskas and the powerful shoppies union won’t allow sensible changes to our shop trading hours.

“If elected in March 2018 a Marshall Liberal Government will amend the legislation so that stores like the Moana IGA will be able to trade and compete fairly with other businesses like On The Run and Star Mart in their local community.”
