May Out and About

I was pleased to hold an evening of 'Politics in the Pub' during the month of May. It was an excellent opportunity to discuss a range of issues faced by local residents. I look forward to more opportunities to talk with you into the future.

As part of National Volunteer Week I was fortunate enough to attend the Norwood Meals on Wheels facility, meeting the many volunteers and thanking them for all they do. Volunteers form the backbone of so many communities across South Australia, this week served as an excellent reminder to appreciate all the wonderful work they do.

The Salvation Army recently held their annual Red Shield Appeal, raising vital funds for their social welfare and community service programs. In support of this innitiative I assisted with fundraising, collecting generous donations along The Parade. I would like to thank the many local residents who donated in support of this worthy cause.

During May I held my annual Austerity Night at the Norwood Salvation Army, an excellent time to meet with members from the local community over a hot cup of soup. I am pleased to announce this year we raised $1,480, with all proceeds used to support both the Salvation Army Red Shield Appeal and Operation Flinders.

It was great to present to St Peter's Old Collegians Football Club with a certificate congratulating them on receiving funding from the Active Club Program. I encourage all local sporting groups in my community to apply for this grant.

I was fortunate to attend some local schools within Dunstan, seeing in action the bright young minds of our next generation. As part of these visits I was able to read to the students from East Adelaide Primary School and Trinity Gardens Primary School. These are two of the many great schools within Dunstan.

Since announcing our Literacy Guarantee policy this month, my office has been inundated with positive feedback. We want our schools to be the best in Australia and for our students to be the beneficiaries of the best education system in Australia. A strong foundation in literacy is critical for success. I was pleased to hear from the many Dunstan constituents who have contacted me in support of this policy.
