No justification for another Labor ESL hike

There is no justification for the Weatherill Labor Government dipping further into the pockets of South Australians by increasing the Emergency Services Levy again.

“South Australians cannot have money ripped out their pockets by the Weatherill Labor Government time and time again,” said State Liberal Leader Steven Marshall.

“Enough is enough.

“There is absolutely no justification for another ESL hike, given that the Weatherill Labor Government is set to receive an additional $857 million in unbudgeted GST revenue from the Federal Government.”

Evidence provided to a parliamentary committee last month revealed that Minister Piccolo had informed emergency service organisations that the ESL may need to be increased.

This was confirmed today by Treasurer Koutsantonis when he announced that the Government plans to further increase ESL bills to raise an extra $20 million per year.

“Massive ESL hikes two years in a row is an utterly disgraceful act by the Weatherill Labor Government, given that many South Australians are struggling to make ends meet as it is,” said Mr Marshall.

“The State Liberals reiterate today that we are committed to helping South Australians who have been hit with massive ESL increases.

“A State Liberal Government will return the ESL remission that Mr Weatherill and Mr Koutsantonis cruelly removed last year and provide South Australians with much needed tax relief.

“The Weatherill Government’s massive increases in the ESL tax doesn’t just hit homeowners; it is also levied on sporting clubs, community organisations, churches and independent schools.

“Increasing the ESL again shows just how out of touch Premier Weatherill is with South Australians.”
