Weatherill hides Royal Commission’s finding into child protection

The State Liberals have accused the Premier Jay Weatherill of playing politics with child protection after he decided to withhold the findings of the Royal Commission into the safety and welfare of at risk children.

The Weatherill Government received the Report on Friday but will not release it until Monday.

“Preventing immediate public scrutiny of this critical report shows that Jay Weatherill is more interested in protecting his job than protecting children at risk of abuse and neglect,” said Deputy State Liberal Leader Vickie Chapman.

“The Royal Commission was established more than two years ago and has had two extensions of time yet the Premier has decided to sit on the report for another 3 days.

“The plight of vulnerable children in South Australia is best served by a fully informed public debate about the failings of Premier Weatherill’s child protection system.

“Clearly Jay Weatherill is anticipating a damning verdict on his Government’s handling of the crisis plagued child protection system and is holed up right now considering how to put the best possible spin on the findings.

“What is needed is a frank discussion about exactly how the Weatherill Government has got child protection so wrong.

“Every parliamentarian, every professional working in child protection, every interested member of the public should be considering Commissioner Nyland’s report right now.

“Instead only the people responsible for the failure of child protection in South Australia have access to the report.”
