Weatherill’s failed jobs budget

Today’s Mid-Year Budget Review (MYBR) highlights the profound failure of the Weatherill Government’s last two self-proclaimed jobs budgets.

“Having presided over the worst unemployment rate in the nation for almost two years today’s MYBR offers nothing for the hundreds of thousands of South Australians who are unemployed or underemployed,” said State Liberal Leader Steven Marshall.

When Treasurer Koutsantonis delivered the State Budget in 2015 he claimed: “Our reforms will create jobs, maintain jobs and build the enterprises that create careers.”

“In fact the Weatherill Government has delivered South Australians the highest unemployment in the nation and the bleak prospect of the jobs market deteriorating even further next year,” said Mr Marshall.

“The concerted job creation plan that South Australia desperately needs is nowhere to be seen in today’s MYBR.

“The fact that the Weatherill Government is incapable of developing a successful job creation strategy whilst reaping a massive financial windfall from the privatisation of the Motor Accident Commission is testimony to its incompetence.

“South Australia’s stagnant economy is the reason we lost 6,398 people to interstate migration last year, it is the reason we have an unemployment rate of 7 per cent and a youth unemployment rate of 15.5 per cent.

“The Weatherill Government’s miserable economic performance is the reason South Australia lags the rest of nation in jobs and opportunity.

“Treasurer Koutsantonis’ claim that he is stimulating the economy is laughable. “Tom Koutsantonis should cut the $360 million ESL tax hike he inflicted on South Australians in 2014.”
