Whyalla left waiting again

The State Liberals have criticised the Premier’s failure to deliver a substantive proposal to improve Arrium’s prospects of survival and safeguard the future of the people of Whyalla.

“After raising everyone’s hopes that their visit would result in positive news, the Premier, Treasurer and Regional Development Minister have once again disappointed the people of Whyalla,” said Shadow Minister for Regional Development Dan van Holst Pellekaan.

“For ten months the Weatherill Government has been telling the people of Whyalla that it is working on a solution to Arrium’s problems, but has still not delivered any positive information regarding the survival of the troubled steel works.

“How long do the Premier and Treasurer expect the public to continue to believe that the Weatherill Government has anything positive to contribute to solving Arrium’s problems?

“All the Weatherill Government has done is to take $10 million set aside for regional grants and converted it into a no-interest loan facility for local businesses, so that instead of being given the money for worthy projects the businesses can borrow it instead.

“That is totally inadequate.

“The Weatherill Government’s response to closure of Alinta’s operations in Leigh Creek and Pt Augusta is totally inadequate.

“Little wonder we have the highest unemployment in the nation.”
