Today’s news about the future of the Whyalla Steelworks are very concerning for the Whyalla community and the broader South Australian economy.
“My immediate thoughts are with Arrium workers, their families and the local community following today’s news that cast grave doubts over Arrium’s future at Whyalla,” said Shadow Employment Minister Corey Wingard.
“Arrium currently employs 1,100 workers at its Whyalla steelworks.
“The State and Federal Government must offer assistance to the company and the local community.
“The Weatherill Labor Government’s response to the announced closure of the Alinta power station at Port Augusta and the Leigh Creek coal mine was pathetic.
“We already have the highest unemployment rate in the nation – if Arrium were to close as well it would be an unmitigated disaster for the South Australian economy.
“Labor has already delivered an economic crisis – Premier Weatherill now cannot afford to sit on his hands while one of the State’s largest employers considers shutting its doors.
“The State Liberal Team are committed to working with the State and Federal Government in a bipartisan manner to deliver whatever is required to keep Arrium operating in South Australia.”
