Glenside is the wrong place for Ward 17

The State Liberals have re-affirmed their opposition to moving the Post Traumatic Stress Disorder Unit for Veterans from the General Repatriation Hospital at Daw Park to Glenside.

“Glenside is the wrong site for Ward 17 and the stubborn refusal of the Weatherill Government to admit it has made a serious mistake will result in degraded health services for veterans at an increased cost to taxpayers,” said Shadow Minister for Health Stephen Wade.

“Glenside lacks the health services to treat the co-morbid health conditions the vast majority of veterans accessing Ward 17 experience, it lacks basic infrastructure such as a hydrotherapy pool and it has no historical connection for Veterans.

“Many Veterans are unhappy at the stigma they feel will attach to a service located at the Glenside site.

“Given that it will cost many millions of dollars extra to deliver a diminished service for Veterans at the Glenside site confirms the need for the Weatherill Government to halt this proposed development today.

“The fact the Daw Park redevelopment Consortium Open Daws has committed to a wide range of health services at the Daw Park site provides the opportunity for better services.

“The promise of a health precinct at Daw Park which could include a private hospital means Daw Park is the best site.

The Weatherill Government needs to reassess the options for the location and operation of the PTSD Centre of Excellence, with the overarching goal of maximising the health outcomes for Veterans and ADF personnel.

Labor must broaden the parameters for the redevelopment of the Daw Park site to include options for the continuation of the PTSD Centre of Excellence there, whether managed by SA Health, by a not-for-profit provider or by a private provider.”
