Hospital staff shed as Transforming Health cuts bite

Cuts to the number of nurses and allied health professionals working in Adelaide’s southern hospital network is the latest disfigurement of health services under Transforming Health.

“Confirmation that hundreds of health professionals will be lost as more than a hundred beds are closed demonstrates that Transforming Health is driven by the need to save money, not lives,” said Shadow Minister for Health Stephen Wade.

“The cuts also make a mockery of Health Minister Jack Snelling’s pledge that there will be no staff reductions until efficiencies are realized.

“The frequent ramping of ambulances at Flinders Medical Centre makes a mockery of the Minister's claim of system improvement.

“Rather than confront bureaucracy and waste, the Weatherill Government has decided to find its budget cuts in clinical services.

“The resulting reductions in health services are now plain to see in the southern hospital network and the Modbury Hospital.

“There are potential savings to found in the delivery of health services that won’t compromise patient care.

“Improving the delivery of IT projects, decentralising our overblown health bureaucracy and ending the repeated overspend of the health budget will deliver savings without reducing patient care.

“The problem is that Transforming Health isn’t implementing these potential savings.
