Labor spends $3 million on Transforming Health media

Revelations that the Weatherill Labor Government is spending $3 million to promote its Transforming Health reforms are an insult to veterans and other South Australians needing care.

The total cost of the Transforming Health process has now hit almost $10 million.

“At a time when the Government is closing hospitals, it is disgraceful that they can find $1.7 million for media adverts and another half a million dollars for pamphlets and posters,” said Shadow Minister for Health Stephen Wade.

“It is not clear that the $3 million price tag covers all the media costs, including the blanketing of Adelaide’s bus shelters, newspaper wrappers and social media.

“How much more money is the Government planning to spend on Transforming Health spin?

“The ultimate frustration is that none of the Government’s propaganda clarifies how many hospital beds will be closed and which services will be cut at each hospital.

“Community concerns add to broad criticism of the plan from the AMA, SASMOA, ANMF and ambulance officers.

“It is clear that nobody is buying the Weatherill Government’s spin that cutting hospital services will result in better health outcomes.

“The verdict of stakeholders and the community is clear - the radical health plan will fail and needs to be withdrawn.

“The plan is half-baked and poorly consulted.  Much of what is salvageable will require radical recasting.

“With any future plan, the community and health professionals must be fully engaged, have access to the detailed data, information and analysis that sits behind the plan, and be given sufficient time to consider the plan.

“The Government’s PR campaign is all about spin – not information – and South Australians have had enough.”
