Light Armoured Vests for Police

If elected in March 2018, a Marshall Liberal Government will immediately initiate a trial of the use of light armoured vests by frontline police.

The Problem

It is important that the equipment our frontline police officers have keeps up with the changes in crimes they must deal with.

Although we live in a peaceful democracy here in South Australia there is the potential for terrorist incidents to undermine our way of life.

We must always be vigilant about the dangers that exist and ensure that our planning remains ahead of the threats against us. This includes ensuring we train and equip our frontline police officers to face these threats, giving them the necessary protective equipment to ensure they are as safe as they can be when incidents arise.

Police are also increasingly exposed to other high-risk situations such as offenders with guns and knives.

As crime evolves, the safety of our police must remain paramount.

The State Liberals' Plan

If elected in March 2018, a Marshall Liberal Government will immediately initiate a trial of the use of light armoured vests by frontline police.

Our police have been seeking increased protection like this and they deserve it.

If the trial confirms the suitability of the vests, a Liberal Government will fund their provision to South Australia’s 1900 frontline police.

The trial will establish in particular whether the vests can be worn in comfort in South Australia’s warm summer climate.

The vests need to be functional as well as comfortable, but most important of all, they must offer the necessary protection to our police officers.

A successful trial will result in further protection of our police officers in the difficult and dangerous situations they often are called upon to deal with.
