State Liberal Leader Steven Marshall has today called on Premier Weatherill to resign following his comprehensive failing of Families SA.
“Premier Weatherill’s sheer arrogance and his failure to accept full responsibility for the current state of the Families SA debacle is completely unacceptable,” said Mr Marshall.
“Enough is enough – it’s time for the Premier to resign.
“Premier Weatherill’s decision to merge Families SA with the Education Department has been an unmitigated disaster and an abject failure.
“The crisis that has developed within Families SA has put children’s lives at risk.
“Premier Weatherill has been dragged kicking and screaming to make this decision and he still believes that merging the two departments was the right thing to do.
“The Government which Premier Weatherill leads is still opposing the establishment of a Commissioner for Children and Young People with independent investigative powers.
“The necessary reforms to child protection cannot be made with a Premier at the helm who does not take full responsibility for the current failures of the child protection system.
“It’s just a ‘pass the buck’ system under the Weatherill Labor Government.
“It was a profound mistake to subsume child protection within the Department of Education and Commissioner Nyland’s findings that child protection is in crisis in South Australia confirm the magnitude of this error.
“Our child protection system in South Australia needs a fresh start, and that fresh start must include the resignation of Premier Weatherill.”
