Marshmallow playspace family day

The State Government and City of Adelaide have officially opened the revitalised Marshmallow Playspace (Pelzer Park / Pityarilla) in the Southern Park lands meaning families can now enjoy the fantastic new facilities.

The State Government has worked with the City of Adelaide to create a community park that promotes physical activity and celebrates nature, aboriginal culture and heritage.

A launch event is being held today to celebrate, with live music, food trucks and loads of activities for the kids such as face painting.

In addition to a fenced dog park completed last year, the activity hub now features a community plaza, landscaped promenades for improved cycling and pedestrian access, upgraded community courts, a nature play area and a complete revamp of the much-loved Marshmallow Playspace. The upgrade includes rehabilitation to the adjacent creek and improvements to lighting, shelter, signage and other amenities.

“Providing open spaces in the city promotes physical activity and helps build a healthier and happier community,” said Minister or Transport, Infrastructure and Local Government Stephan Knoll.

“As a parent I know the Marshmallow playspace has always been a very popular destination for families, and this project has transformed a great space to make it even better.

“The joint $5.8 million investment in the activity hub and the fenced dog park contributes to a more liveable city for everyone.”
Lord Mayor Martin Haese said the revitalisation of the community park shows how Council takes the community’s ideas on board and transforms them into iconic open spaces that are welcoming and are there for everyone to enjoy.

“As more people choose to live in the city, spaces like these provide another opportunity for residents and visitors to interact with our Park Lands,” said the Lord Mayor.

“This project is a direct result of the City of Adelaide’s Shape Your Park Lands consultation in 2015 and we are proud to deliver it with the support of the State Government.”

“We are looking forward to seeing a big crowd today and encourage everyone to get along with their family and friends to enjoy the day.”

Today’s launch event begins at 11am and runs until 2pm.
