Transitioning to new defence jobs

If elected in March a Marshall Liberal Government will assist ex-service personnel and veterans transition into new jobs created by the Federal Government’s $90 billion investment in naval ship building projects.

Under the Liberals’ plan veterans would see more employment opportunities created through a targeted program, improved access to Government services, increased support for veterans’ partners and families and greater recognition honouring their contribution and sacrifice.

“Around 5,200 personnel leave the Australian Defence Force (ADF) every year and many aren’t receiving the support required to make a smooth transition into their next career,” said State Liberal Leader Steven Marshall.

“That’s why we will fund a Defence Industry Employment Program, to create and promote new job opportunities for our veterans and help them transition into their next career.

“We’ve been consulting with the Defence Teaming Centre Inc (DTC) and this program will operate through DTC to leverage their existing defence industry relationships to maximise job outcomes.

“The Federal Government’s once in a generation $90 billion naval ship building investment could create up to 25,000 South Australian jobs.

“We will ensure that our veterans are able to capitalise on the significant job opportunities that will flow through the defence sector in South Australia for decades to come.

“We know that there are around 140,000 people in South Australia who are either unemployed or wanting more work so we desperately need to get more people into the workforce.

“There will be a host of employment opportunities that exist throughout the defence industry supply chain and there are none better placed to capitalise on those than our veterans.

“Our veterans leave the defence force with a unique and specialised skill set and industry knowledge and we will help them capitalise on these opportunities as they move on to their next career.

“This is the first of a number of initiatives that we will be announcing to maximise South Australian job opportunities from the Federal Government’s $90 billion investment in naval ship building projects.”
